The meditations in this book will probably rank high among many similar works which the contemplative love of Jesus has produced; but it is our duty here plainly to affirm that they have no pretensions whatever to be regarded as history. They are but intended to take one of the lowest places among those numerous representations of the Passion which have been given us by pious writers and artists, and to be considered at the very utmost as the Lenten meditations of a devout nun, related in all simplicity, and written down in the plainest and most literal language, from her own dictation. To these meditations, she herself never attached more than a mere human value, and never related them except through obedience, and upon the repeated commands of the directors of her conscience.

Clemens Brentano was a well-known and well-to-do German poet and writer. After he had met the German nun and mystic, Anna Emmerich, on September 24, 1818, he was so amazed, he decided to be her stenographer. He later wrote, “I feel that I must stay here, that I must not leave this admirable creature before her death. I feel that my mission is here, and that God has heard the prayer I made when I begged him to give me something to do for His glory that would not be above my strength. Aeterna Press

Even three hundred years ago, believers found it difficult to sustain for forty days the proper Lenten spirit. That's why even then, countless Christians turned to the writings of Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704), whose great piety and simple eloquence won him renown as one of the greatest preachers of his time. From Bishop Bossuet's sermons and spiritual writings, believers drew ever greater Lenten wisdom and strength. Now translator Christopher Blum has selected from Bishop Bossuet's voluminous works fifty brief but remarkably powerful meditations that complement the daily readings at Mass during the Lenten season, thus offering to us the perfect companion for a thoughtful and fruitful Lent. If you read and meditate briefly on just one of them each day in Lent, I guarantee that this good French bishop's eloquence will soon have you not merely remembering the events of Christ's journey to His Crucifixion; it will have you spiritually walking with Him on that journey . . . which is precisely what we are called to do in Lent! With Bossuet, this Lent you will find yourself saying, "O Jesus! I present myself to you to make my journey in your company. O my Savior, receive your traveler! Here I am ready, holding on to nothing. Let me go with You to the Father." That's the fire that should burn in the heart of all Christians. This Lent, let Bishop Bossuet enkindle it in yours. Among the Meditations: God Alone Suffices Pray to God in Secret The Truth and the Life Tempted in the Desert The Sign of Jonah Love Your Enemies This Is My Beloved Son And You Will Be Forgiven The Wicked Tenants In Spirit and in Truth The Silence of Christ Priest, Prophet, and King Our Life, a Journey to God The Great Commandment I Was Hungry and You Fed Me The Love of God for Repentant Sinners Up to Jerusalem God, the Life of the Soul The Witness of the Baptist The Raising of Lazarus Jesus Is Persecuted The True Messiah The Anointing The Betrayal The Eucharist The Passion The Brevity of Life Washed of Our Sins A Sign of Contradiction No Man Ever Spoke Like This Man The Entry of Our Lord into Jerusalem To Unite Ourselves with Christ

First published in 1833, "The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ" was the principal extrabiblical source for Mel Gibson's blockbuster 2004 movie "The Passion of the Christ," which grossed over $600 million in worldwide box office. To write the work, Goethe friend and author Clemens Brentano spent six years at the bedside of 19th century Augustinian nun Anne Catherine Emmerich, recording her spectacular visions of the life, passion, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In addition to being a visionary, Emmerich was an ecstatic, stigmatic and inediac. After she died in 1824, Brentano spent nine years organizing his notes on the renowned nun's visions of the passion and crucifixion before publishing them as "The Dolorous Passion." The book soon outsold even Goethe in Germany, and became an international best-seller. The book was all but forgotten until resurrected by Gibson for his classic movie about the Passion.

As I am now more than eighty-six years old I don’t think it probable that I shall attempt any more translations of Sister Emmerich’s revelations. I wish, therefore, to say a few words about dear Sister Emmerich before parting. I have read through her revelations several times during the last sixty years, and I have more frequently read through the New Testament, and have never been able to detect the slightest opposition between them. The discovery of the House of the Blessed Virgin near Ephesus, exactly corresponding with Sister Emmerich’s description of it, has given a new impetus to the desire to read her revelations. This discovery will lead, no doubt, in God’s good time, to the finding of our Lady’s Tomb, the scene of her glorious Assumption. The statements made by Sister Emmerich must be regarded only as those of a devout Nun, and must not be confounded with statements of facts supported by the testimony of the Church. Aeterna Press

Contains many astounding revelations that support our faith, yet are not contained in the Bible or in any other sacred literature. Includes a day-by-day account of the public life of Christ, plus a rendition of the lives of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist, St. Anne and St. Joachim, plus many ancestors of Our Lord. Describes events from the creation of the world to the Apostles' early missionary work, plus the death of the Blessed Mother. Shows that the Church founded by Jesus Christ is the Catholic Church, identical in substance, and even in many details, with the Catholic Church of our times. Says the Egyptians falsified their calendar to make their nation appear older than it was. Says that the Holy Grail of the First Mass was the same chalice used by Melchisedech in his sacrifice of bread and wine. Says St. Peter worked more miracles than any other Apostle, also that he celebrated Mass exactly as Our Lord had done. A treasure trove of information obtainable from no other source. Seems an act of God these visions were permitted and recorded.

Archbishop Alban Goodier, S.J. fills in the many blanks in the historical narratives about the Passion of Jesus Christ with a riveting account based on history, culture and his own deep spiritual insights. He brings to life and unifies the many observations, emotions and subtle and not-so-subtle actions that revolve around the person of God the Son as he faces his most tragic and triumphant moment. The author’s unique approach intersperses Scripture accounts with the commentary of an incisive narrator who sifts and judges from the span of hundreds of years. He draws from the obvious as well as the obscure, and finds supernatural meaning in the most mundane actions that surround the suffering Christ. In the hands of this writer, the Lord’s few words, accompanied by the author’s commentary, challenge contemporary believers as much as they did those who first followed in the footsteps of Christ and his apostles. The author was born in 1869 in Lancashire, northern England and educated at the prominent Catholic college, Stonyhurst, which has been the source of many English Catholic politicians, intellectuals and business people. After a degree from the University of London, he was ordained a Jesuit in 1903. He served as archbishop of Bombay from 1919 to 1926 and returned to England to write and serve as a chaplain until his death in 1939.

Anne Catherine Emmerich was an Augustinian nun recognized as the recipient of many mystic gifts and vision. She is believed to have received the full stigmata, of which she reported suffering the physical effects of Jesus' punctured hands, feet, side, and forehead. Moved by her religious piety, German poet Clemens Brentano was inspired to document her ordeal. Brentano spent many months with Anne Catherine as she dictated the details of her encounters, which Brentano later compiled into the book The Dolorous Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. In this book, Anne Catherine's visions of Christ's agony and death are documented in unimaginable detail. While Anne Catherine's sacred wounds were witnessed by many during her time, the highly poetical and extravagant imagery in Brentano's book have led scholars to believe that Brentano may have embellished her descriptions as he recorded them. Consequently, this account of Anne Catherine's visions should be appreciated for its meditative value rather than for its historical accuracy. The filmmaker Mel Gibson for his film The Passion of the Christ, was also inspired by the diaries of Emmerich.
