Poetry. "Gavin Selerie weaves together richly colored threads taken from Gothic storytelling, Irish politics and literature, feminist heroic history and the fascinating development of popular theatre. His dazzling kaleidoscope uses a varied sequence of verse forms: the effect is oral, brash, sparky, and yet grounded in a deep knowledge and love of the highest poetic tradition. LE FANU'S GHOST reveals, in a most original way, the wonderful cross-pollination of high and low, notorious and neglected, oral and literary, Gaelic and Faery lore, Ireland and England, and will give great pleasure to readers"-Marina Warner. "Selerie's nonfictional-fictional genealogical poetic quest into the life, friends, and relations of the Anglo-Irish author of Gothic thrillers, such as Carmilla and Uncle Silas, sometimes recalls the procedures of Melville in Moby-Dick, particularly the extracts supplied by a Sub-Sub-Librarian. Every contingent sound-bite of information has been arranged to perfection"-Susan Howe.

'I was conscious of a most horrible smell of mould, and of a cold kind of face pressed against my own...' Considered by many to be the most terrifying writer in English, M. R. James was an eminent scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic surroundings of Eton and Cambridge. His classic supernatural tales draw on the terrors of the everyday, in which documents and objects unleash terrible forces, often in closed rooms and night-time settings where imagination runs riot. Lonely country houses, remote inns, ancient churches or the manuscript collections of great libraries provide settings for unbearable menace, from creatures seeking retribution and harm. These stories have lost none of their power to unsettle and disturb. This edition presents all of James's published ghost stories, including the unforgettable 'Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad' and 'Casting the Runes', and an appendix of James's writings on the ghost story. Darryl Jones's introduction and notes provide a fascinating insight into James's background and his mastery of the genre he made his own. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Adagia of Erasmus (surely the original best-seller) was first published in 1500. It went through numerous impressions and ten major revisions in the course of Erasmus's life. Its influence was incalculable. It disseminated humanist learning and humanist attitudes among the new reading public to such an extent that it can be claimed as one of the books that contributed most to form the European mind. The adages were proverbs or popular sayings taken from classical literature. Many are part of the common stock of our speech today. A necessary evil, cupboard love, a rare bird, an iron in the fire, are all to be found in the Adagia. Erasmus refers each to its source; then follows with a commentary on the meaning and with whatever ideas and personal observations arose from it. The book's influence waned after his death.

This early work by Sheridan Le Fanu was originally published in 1840. Born in Dublin in 1814, he came from a literary family of Huguenot origins; both his grandmother Alicia Sheridan Le Fanu and his great-uncle Richard Brinsley Sheridan were playwrights, and his niece Rhoda Broughton would go on to become a successful novelist. Le Fanu entered Trinity College, Dublin to study law. While there, he was elected Auditor of the College Historical Society, and between 1838 and 1840 published his first series of short stories, which were later collected as The Purcell Papers. At his peak, le Fanu was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century, and he is now seen as central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. His work is credited with turning the Gothic's focus from the external sources of horror to the inward effects of terror, thus helping to create the psychological basis for supernaturalist literature that continues to this day. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Edward Verrall Lucas (1868-1938) was a versatile and popular English writer of nearly 100 books. His style has great facility, and is generally found insipid by contemporary readers; some of his cricket writing has lasted. He is now remembered for his essays and books about London and travel, appearing in many editions, and his biography of Charles Lamb. He was educated at Friends Public School in Saffron Walden. He worked first in a Brighton bookshop and then on a Sussex newspaper. He was responsible for A. A. Milne teaming up with E. H. Shepard for the Winnie-the- Pooh books. He wrote under pen names EVL, VVV, E. D. Ward, and FF for film criticism. Some of his early work was in collaboration with Charles Larcom Graves, another Punch writer. Amongst his other works are Highways and Byways in Sussex (1904), The Friendly Town (1905), A Wanderer in Holland (1905), AWanderer in Florence (1912), AWanderer In Venice (1914), A Boswell of Baghdad (1917) and A Wanderer Among Pictures (1924).
