Jew Boy is Alan Kaufman's riveting memoir of being raised by a Jewish mother who survived the Holocaust. This pioneering masterpiece, the very first memoir of its kind by a member of the Second Generation is Kaufman's coming-of-age account, by turns hilarious and terrifying, written with irreverent humor and poetic introspection. Throughout the course of his memoir, Kaufman touches on the pain, guilt, and confusion that shape the lives and characters of American-born children of Holocaust survivors. Kaufman struggles to comprehend what it means to be Jewish as he deals with the demons haunting his mother and attempts to escape his wretched home life by devoting himself to high school football. He eventually hitchhikes across the country, coming face-to-face with the phantoms he fled. Taking us from the streets of the Bronx to the highways of America, the kibbutzim and Israeli army to personal rebirth in San Francisco, and finally to a final reckoning in Germany, Jew Boy shines with the universal humanity of a brilliant writer embracing the gift of life. Kaufman's fierce passion will leave no reader untouched.

Today's database professionals must understand how to apply database systems to business processes and how to develop database systems for both business intelligence and Web-based applications. Database Development and Management explains all aspects of database design, access, implementation, application development, and management, as well as data analysis for business intelligence. This self-contained text gives students hands-on projects required for professionally developing and managing databases. It provides detailed instruction via an easy-to-follow, step-by-step case-based approach. Following an introduction to database components, the book uses case studies to illustrate the modeling process, covers table structures and normalization, and analyzes the transformation of a data model to a relational database. It explains the use of SQL in managing database objects and in querying databases, then discusses Transact-SQL and the views, indexes, and cursors that bridge databases and their applications. The book examines three major data-accessing techniques, and then shows how to develop sophisticated applications based upon the material included in previous chapters. It explores the use of databases in network environments, and details the multiple tasks handled by database administrators (DBAs). The text also discusses the OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) system, data warehousing, and other analysis tools that support business intelligence and decision making. It concludes with a review of data mining.

Flexible linings provide a means of stabilizing roadside channels. Flexible linings are able to conform to changes in channel shape while maintaining overall lining integrity. Long-term flexible linings such as riprap, gravel, or vegetation (reinforced with synthetic mats or unreinforced) are suitable for a range of hydraulic conditions. Unreinforced vegetation and many transitional and temporary linings are suited to hydraulic conditions with moderate shear stresses. Design procedures are given for four major categories of flexible lining: vegetative linings; manufactured linings (RECPs); riprap, cobble, gravel linings; and gabion mattress linings. Design procedures for composite linings, bends, and steep slopes are also provided. The design procedures are based on the concept of maximum permissible tractive force. Methods for determination of hydraulic resistance applied shear stress as well as permissible shear stress for individual linings and lining types are presented. This edition includes updated methodologies for vegetated and manufactured lining design that addresses the wide range of commercial products now on the market. This edition also includes a unified design approach for riprap integrating alternative methods for estimating hydraulic resistance and the steep slope procedures. Other minor updates and corrections have been made. This edition has been prepared using dual units.
