Honda B-series engines are some of the most popular for enthusiasts to swap, and they came in many popular Honda and Acura models over the years, including the Civic, Integra, Accord, Prelude, CRX, del Sol, and even the CR-V. In this special Workbench book, author Jason Siu uses more than 600 photos, charts, and illustrations to give simple step-by-step instructions on disassembly, cleaning, machining tips, pre-assembly fitting, and final assembly. This book gives considerations for both stock and performance rebuilds. Wetlands are, by their very nature, ephemeral and transitional, which makes them challenging to characterize. Yet the need for characterizing wetlands continues to grow, particularly as we develop a better understanding of the wealth of ecosystem services that they provide. Wetland Landscape Characterization: Practical Tools, Methods, and Approaches for Landscape Ecology, Second Edition shows how wetland characterization tools, methods, and approaches can be integrated to more effectively address twenty-first-century wetland issues. A Practical Toolbox for Integrated Wetland Landscape Characterization The book explains how to locate, identify, and map the extent of wetlands to learn more about their importance to society and the larger landscape. It examines jurisdictional, regulatory, and practical applications from the scientific, engineering, and lay perspectives. Fully updated, the second edition reflects an emerging infrastructural, ecosystem goods-and-services perspective to better assist readers who may encounter these concepts and challenges as they assess and characterize wetlands. Examples and case studies illustrate a variety of situations and solutions, highlighting the use of current techniques to assess, inventory, and monitor natural resources under changing conditions. These examples offer lessons and ideas for the issues encountered every day by wetland landscape ecology practitioners. The book also refers readers to additional resources to help them solve specific challenges. New in This Edition Updates of practical geospatial methods More project-driven examples A description of the pitfalls of using ecological data at landscape scales, along with solutions Alternative techniques for a variety of practitioners Linkages between field and landscape ecological practices Online resources for practitioners New illustrations This book helps readers develop the concepts, skills, and understanding of how to best achieve project goals in the rapidly changing disciplines of landscape science and wetland ecology and management. A valuable resource, it provides practical tools, methods, and approaches for conceptualizing, designing, and implementing broad-scale wetland projects that take into account critical societal linkages.

Design for a Vulnerable Planet

We inhabit a vulnerable planet. The devastation caused by natural disasters such as the southern Asian tsunami, Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, and the earthquakes in China's Sichuan province, Haiti, and Chile—as well as the ongoing depletion and degradation of the world's natural resources caused by a burgeoning human population—have made it clear that "business as usual" is no longer sustainable. We need to find ways to improve how we live on this planet while minimizing our impact on it. Design for a Vulnerable Planet sounds a call for designers and planners to go beyond traditional concepts of sustainability toward innovative new design that fosters regeneration and resilience. Drawing on his own and others' experiences across three continents, Frederick Steiner advocates design practice grounded in ecology and democracy and informed by critical regionalism and reflection. He begins by establishing the foundation for a more ecological approach to planning and design, adopting a broad view of ecology as encompassing human and natural, urban and wild environments. Steiner explores precedents for human ecological design provided by architect Paul Cret, landscape architect Ian McHarg, and developer George Mitchell while discussing their planning for the University of Texas campus, the Lake Austin watershed, and The Woodlands. Steiner then focuses on emerging Texas urbanism and extends his discussion to broader considerations beyond the Lone Star State, including regionalism, urbanism, and landscape in China and Italy. He also examines the lessons to be learned from human and natural disasters such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the BP oil spill. Finally, Steiner offers a blueprint for designing with nature to help heal the planet's vulnerabilities.

Concise but comprehensive, Jonathan Ochshorn's Structural Elements for Architects and Builders explains how to design and analyze columns, beams, tension members and their connections. The material is organized into a single, self-sufficient volume, including all necessary data for the preliminary design and analysis of these structural elements in wood, steel, and reinforced concrete. Every chapter contains insights developed by the author and generally not found elsewhere. Appendices included at the end of each chapter contain numerous tables and graphs, based on material contained in industry publications, but reorganized and formatted especially for this text to improve clarity and simplicity, without sacrificing comprehensiveness. Procedures for design and analysis are based on the latest editions of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (AF&PA and AWC), the Steel Construction Manual (AISC), Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI), and Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI). This thoroughly revised and expanded second edition of Structural Elements includes an introduction to statics and strength of materials, an examination of loads, and new sections on material properties and construction systems within the chapters on wood, steel, and reinforced concrete design. This permits a more comprehensive overview of the various design and analysis procedures for each of the major structural materials used in modern buildings. Free structural calculators (search online for: Ochshorn calculators) have been created for many examples in the book, enabling architects and builders to quickly find preliminary answers to structural design questions commonly encountered in school or in practice.

KENNEDY'S HAWAIIAN AIR: history of the islands' first airline. Conceived in 1929 by Stanley C. Kennedy, Sr., the book reveals the challenges, opposition to & early development of inter-island service. It started with two Sikorsky S-38 amphibians; in 1935 the Sikorsky S-43, a larger & faster amphibian was added. In mid-1941; Kennedy bought three new Douglas DC-3 aircraft. The company name became Hawaiian Airlines. The Japanese Pearl Harbor attack damaged the company's aircraft. Surface shipping ceased between the islands. HAL began the nation's first air cargo service. Postwar competition for passengers began, causing HAL political & financial stress. Since 1934 Kennedy had sought to fly overseas, persisting in an effort that never ceased. At age 65 Kennedy chose Arthur Lewis, a mainland airline executive, to manage HAL. He remained Kennedy Board chairman until Honolulu entrepreneur J.H. Magoon bought majority control in December 1963. HAL bought a jet aircraft (DC-9) in 1966, & acquired more & larger models until 1982, selling the DC-3 & jetprop Convair 640 aircraft. In 1982, HAL began Pacific service using DC-8 aircraft. The Lockheed L1011 aircraft was used in daily service to west coast cities starting in 1985, and then added to South Pacific routes. Poor management resulted in serious losses & HAL filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. By 1994, free of Chapter 11 without a shutdown of service, Magoon sold out. New management striving to keep the airline viable. Order the book from Olomana Pub. ($11ppd), 1605 Uluamahi, Kailua, HI 96734. Disc. in bulk. NO CREDIT CARDS.
