A series of public lectures presented in 1956 in London, and published in volume form with additional material in 1964. Bennett's Theory of Universal Energies was first presented in his great work THE DRAMATIC UNIVERSE. In this new book he has written a popular but complete account which can be understood by those without specialized scientific knowledge or training who are nevertheless interested in scientific interpretations of personal experience. He shows how depth psychology, mysticism and religious experience connect with modern theories of Energy, Field Forces and Vital Structures, and the later chapters devoted to Consciousness, Creativity and Love open new vistas towards understanding man and the universe as a complete harmonious structure. The book contains hitherto unpublished results of the researches by Mr. Bennett and his colleagues at the Institute for the Comparative Study of History, Philosophy and the Sciences. Although the original lectures were presented after the publication of the first volume of "The Dramatic Universe", and before the author's introduction to the Subud practice, the author draws heavily on elements of G. I. Gurdjieff's teaching. When the lectures were published in 1964, the author had spent four years intensively involved with Subud, and had already left the Brotherhood, had been converted to Catholicism and encountered three teachers who would for different reasons assume a pivotal position in the author's life - the Shivapuri Baba, in India, Hasan Shushud in Turkey and Idries Shah in England. This volume is numbered 12 in the series of The Collected Works of J.G. Bennett. The publication policy applied to this series is to make no alterations or updates to the original text, nor are footnotes included, unless added by the author himself or original editor. The first edition of this book was made by Coombe Springs Press, which was low-budget facility operating with untrained printers or publishers and typesetting was with the use of an IBM Executive electric typewriter. The graphics included in the original edition were hand-drawn and somewhat crude and have been recreated using modern technology, but not altered in style or content.

What are we living for? What is the purpose of Life? These questions arose in the mind of a 14-year-old schoolboy at a boarding school in wartime Britain. In pursuit of answers he entered a stairway that lead him to the Quakers, then to the Vedanta philosophy, then on to P.D. Ouspensky and the teachings of G.I.Gurdjieff. By chance he found John Godolphin Bennett, one of the leading exponents of Gurdjieff's 'system', as it was known, and studied for 7 years at the Institute for the Comparative Study of History, Philosophy and the Sciences. Finally in 1957 Subud arrived in England with the arrival of Pak Subuh and his entourage. This book contains a dramatic account of the author's first resistance to this movement, and then an about turn with accounts of changes of consciousness. Knowledge is one thing and belongs to the world of Science. But Consciousness is something other. And Will belongs in yet another dimension. Can man ever become free from the power of the Satanic forces?

This is the story of a life of adventure and search, an account of meetings with great teachers, a love story, an inspirational tale of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. John Bennett (1897-1974) had not one career but several; starting his life as a soldier and spymaster in the early years of the Middle East conflicts, Bennett moved into - and failed - in the world of finance as an adventurer and entrepreneur. He reinvented himself as a world-leading technologist and director of research. All through his adult life, his outer life was on a parallel and sometimes divergent course to his inner spiritual search under the guidance of P.D. Ouspensky and G.I. Gurdjieff. After his career in the coal industry came to an abrupt end in his sixth decade, he entered the path of a single-minded seeker. For fifteen years, he travelled widely, seeking knowledge and sharing knowledge. Although he began a written account of his ideas in 1940, it was only in the last four years of his life that he declared his willingness to teach and worked intensively with large groups of students at his International Academy for Continuous Education. Subsequent history has revealed over end over that Bennett was ahead of his time, and that he developed and presented a vision of the next stage of evolution of humanity in the Synergic Epoch.

As the closest pupil of the charismatic spiritual master G. I. Gurdjieff (1866–1949), Jeanne de Salzmann was charged with carrying on his teachings of spiritual transformation. Known as the Fourth Way or "the Work", Gurdjieff's system was based on teachings of the East that he adapted for modern life in the West. Now, some twenty years after De Salzmann's death, the notebooks that she filled with her insights over a forty-year period (and intended to publish) have been translated and edited by a small group of her family and followers. The result is this long-awaited guide to Gurdjieff's teaching, describing the routes to be travelled and the landmarks encountered along the way. Organized according to themes, the chapters touch on all the important concepts and practices of the Work, including:? awakening from the sleep of identification with the ordinary level of being ? self-observation and self-remembering ? conscious effort and voluntary suffering ? understanding symbolic concepts like the Enneagram ? the Gurdjieff Movements, bodily exercises that provide training in Presence and the awareness of subtle energies ? the necessity of a "school," meaning the collective practice of the teaching in a group. Madame de Salzmann brings to the Work her own strong, direct language and personal journey in learning to live that knowledge of a higher level of being, which, she insists, "you have to see for yourself" on a level beyond theory and concept. De Salzmann consistently refused to discuss the teaching in terms of ideas, for this Fourth Way is to be experienced, not simply thought or believed.

Are biological evolution and human history directed by a hierarchy of Intelligences, the lowest level of which makes physical contact with mankind? Do invisible guardians of this planet "seed" ideas into the earth's cultures to prepare human beings for huge steps in their development? The author suggests not only that it may be so, but that it may also be possible to recognize these "People of the Secret."
