It is the ancient days of the Persian Empire. Hadassah was content in her quiet life in the Jewish quarter of the city of Babylon with her uncle Mordecai, who had raised her from childhood. But she was old enough to be married, and yet her uncle hadn't arranged a marriage for her. Meanwhile in Shushan, King Ahasuerus' marriage to the vain and selfish Vashti has ended, and a new wife must be found. Why not bring to him the most beautiful women of the kingdom, and let him choose? And so the loveliest young women of the empire are selected in local contests, and Hadassah is among those chosen to go to Shushan to meet the King. But as a Jewess in a foreign land with powerful enemies to her faith, she must conceal her true identity and take the Babylonian name of Esther. Will she find love with a man she has never met? And can she survive in a strict royal court controlled by the evil prime minister Haman, who wants to destroy her people? Out of print for 40 years, this special edition contains the original text of "Behold Your Queen " in a large, trade size paperback, suitable for collecting.

Excerpt from A Short Account of Great Malvern Priory Church: A History of the Monastery, and Description of the Fabric, With a Chapter on the Ancient Glass Tiles I am ashamed to think for how many years this volume has been announced as "in preparation." Small, however, as it is, the task of gathering material for it has been not light. The historical chapter, in particular, necessitated much research. Of guide-books to Malvern and its church there are many, but they show that characteristic weakness of their tribe - a readiness to make dubious historical statements upon no real authority, and a tendency to repeat, without inquiry, each other's inaccuracies. I cannot hope that my historical chapter is free from errors, but I trust that, being equipped with references, it may prove of service to later students travelling along the same road. Most valuable assistance has been given me from many quarters. I am indebted to, among others, Dr. M. R. James, Mr. G. McN. Rushforth (who is preparing, I am glad to know, a monograph on the Priory's ancient glass), Dr. Armitage Robinson, Mr. J. W. Willis Bund, Mr. F. Bligh Bond, Mr. A. Troyte Griffith, Mrs. Way, and (by no means least) my colleague the Rev. J. E. H. Blake. The photographs of the church are mostly the skilled work of my friend the Rev. Dr. Hermitage Day. Those of the misericords, and some others, were taken for me by kind helpers who wish to be unnamed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Godfrey Malvern, or the Life of an Author Within a country churchyard, which stood upon the gentle slope of a green hill-side, -its summit crowned with a grey, old, and weather beaten church, - stood a young man dressed in deep mourning; his forehead half buried in the palm of his hand, while his elbow rested on the top of a tall gravestone. The tombstone was partly covered with a rich, short, orange-coloured lichen, such as is often seen on old ruins, or giving an additional beauty to the picturesque in landscape scenery. In the present instance, however, it was fast obliterating the workman ship of some forgotten village-sculpture, and already half concealed a very plump cherub, who with wings placed cross wise on his breast, and huge swollen cheeks, seemed endeavouring in vain to blow away the destructive creepers which were rapidly overgrowing both himself and his stony trumpet. As for the poor inhabitant below, not a letter was visible to tell of either his name or his age; and a. Grim death's-head, that stood grinning from a neighbouring gravestone - as if it had long watched the slow working of decay, -now seemed to gaze in triumph at the victory which Time had once more obtained over Human Vanity. Here is a major work by a Chilean poet thought by many to be the most brilliant and important new voice in the Spanish language. In its first American edition, this poetry is presented in Spanish and Enlgish, so that readers of both languages may listed to Zurita's voice. Anteparadise can be read as a creative response, an act of resistance by a young artist to the violence and suffering during and after the 1973 coup that toppled the democratically elected Allende government. Zurita thus follows the example of several Latin American pets such as the Peruvian César Vallejo and Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, sharing their passion and urgency, but his voice is unique.

An understanding of the mechanical behavior of materials is crucial to the success of many technological endeavors, yet few researchers master both mechanics and materials science. This unique volume helps bridge the important gap between the two disciplines. Bringing together contributions by some of the foremost authorities in these fields, this practical work introduces materials scientists to the quantitative aspects of analysis and computation, and members of the mechanics community to the tools and applications of materials science and testing and characterization methods. The authors present diverse methodologies, practices, and nomenclature-pointing out the many shared and related concepts and helping readers tackle cross-disciplinary problems with ease. In two major parts dealing with the basics and microstructural phenomena, Mechanics and Materials: Fundamentals and Linkages features: * An easy-to-understand introduction to each discipline * Survey of the most useful analytical techniques available to materials scientists and engineers today * Broad coverage of mechanics-materials problems, from intrinsic properties to environmental influences * Mechanics topics ranging from continuum mechanics to micromechanics, encompassing elasticity, plasticity, and fracture * Materials topics such as creep, thermal activation, fatigue, polycrystallinity, dislocations, dynamic effects, and characterization methods Complete with more than 300 figures and charts, and drawing on course material from the prestigious Institute for Mechanics and Materials' summer schools, Mechanics and Materials: Fundamentals and Linkages is an indispensable guide for students and professionals seeking to expand and integrate their knowledge of these fields.

This broad-ranging text/reference presents a fascinating review of the state of the art of modeling and simulation, highlighting both the seminal work of preeminent authorities and exciting developments from promising young researchers in the field. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC), the premier international forum for disseminating recent advances in the field of system simulation, the book showcases the historical importance of this influential conference while also looking forward to a bright future for the simulation community. Topics and features: examines the challenge of constructing valid and efficient models, emphasizing the benefits of the process of simulation modeling; discusses model calibration, input model risk, and approaches to validating emergent behaviors in large-scale complex systems with non-linear interactions; reviews the evolution of simulation languages, and the history of the Time Warp algorithm; offers a focus on the design and analysis of simulation experiments under various goals, and describes how data can be “farmed” to support decision making; provides a comprehensive overview of Bayesian belief models for simulation-based decision making, and introduces a model for ranking and selection in cloud computing; highlights how input model uncertainty impacts simulation optimization, and proposes an approach to quantify and control the impact of input model risk; surveys the applications of simulation in semiconductor manufacturing, in social and behavioral modeling, and in military planning and training; presents data analysis on the publications from the Winter Simulation Conference, offering a big-data perspective on the significant impact of the conference. This informative and inspiring volume will appeal to all academics and professionals interested in computational and mathematical modeling and simulation, as well as to graduate students on the path to form the next generation of WSC pioneers.
